MADISON COUNTY, Fla. — A Madison County Sheriff's deputy was seriously injured after he was hit by a sedan during a traffic stop on the shoulder of Interstate 10.
It happened just before 8 p.m. near the 250 mile marker.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the deputy was stepping out of his patrol vehicle when another driver lost control and hit the deputy, the patrol vehicle, and the vehicle the deputy had stopped.
A report from the patrol says the driver went onto the north paved apron of the roadway before overcorrecting across two lanes of traffic.
The deputy is alert and stable and was transported by air to a Tallahassee-area hospital. The report said he had "serious incapacitating injuries". The driver involved in the traffic stop was also outside of his car and was not hurt in the crash.
The crash briefly closed one lane of the interstate. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
"Information is limited at this time however I humbly ask our community to pray for our deputy," Sheriff David Harper said.
